IKON photo is an organization of five professional photographers based in Bangladesh. Dedicated to the development of photography through the South Asia region, IKON photo arranges photography workshops, exhibitions and events.
On the occasion of International women's day 2006 IKON photo organized a photography competition for women photographers only, in Bangladesh. This was the first such competition in the country and was followed by an exhibition of the results.
Photographs were submitted from all over Bangladesh - a total of 139 entries and 404 images. Most of the entries were from amateur photographers. Six renowned judges chose three images for the award of 'Grand prize' and another three images for 'Honorary mention'. Besides this, the best 100 images were selected for the exhibition.
The competition helped local women photographers to gain acknowledgement for their endeavours. This is intended to help them develop the confidence to step forward, to contribute in the development of the media sector.
